The project will provide an increase in capacity from two to three DART services per hour per direction between Bray and Greystones.
The capacity increase will be achieved through modifications to the railway infrastructure including track work, removing of rail/road interface constraints, signalling and overhead power supply changes.
DART+ Coastal programme is seeking to increase the frequency and capacity of train services between Drogheda and Greystones. This can be achieved by changing to electrified, high capacity DART trains and increasing the frequency of trains. Delivery of this project will support the existing communities along the railway and support future sustainable development. DART+ Coastal will serve the existing stations along the route as well as a future station at Woodbrook using electrical power that has a lower carbon footprint than the existing diesel trains. The frequency and quality of service will provide a viable transport alternative to communities along the route and will encourage people to switch from private car use. This will assist in Ireland reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transport and help combat climate change. The electrification of the rail line will predominantly follow the existing railway corridor.
Accessibility is an important aspect of the design of the DART+ Programme. Where new interventions are made as part of the DART+ Programme, Iarnród Éireann will ensure that these are fully accessible and compliant with Part M of the Building Regulations. Furthermore, Iarnród Éireann will continue its rollout of the Accessibility Programme under other funded projects. Together, DART+ Programme and the Accessibility Programme will improve access to persons with reduced or impaired mobility and other passengers with sensory impairments.
DART+ Coastal will provide a sustainable, electrified and a more reliable train service with improved capacity. The electrification of the northern line to Drogheda will support building a sustainable and connected City Region and facilitate the transition to a low carbon and climate resilient society.
The enhanced services on this section will benefit from improved journey times as a result of elimination of the level crossings and the greater operational effiency that, that will deliver.
